Meet Albert: The Retired Gunner

Sit down with a retired Royal Artillery gunner at the Castle's Military Hospital and hear first-hand stories of an army life of service and duty.
Visitors can step into the past and meet Albert, the Retired Gunner, a living history character who brings the experiences of a former Royal Artillery soldier to life at the Military Hospital in the Castle. Guests can take a seat, share a conversation and hear Albert's story as he reflects on a life shaped by military service, discipline and duty.
Though the years may have slowed him physically, his mind remains sharp, his memories vivid and his loyalty to the values of service unwavering.
Albert's story begins in a working-class community in England, where opportunities were limited and military service offered the promise of regular pay, purpose and belonging. As a young man, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery, a branch of the Army known for its precision, technical skill and resilience.
Through Albert's eyes, visitors discover the realities of life as a gunner, from learning the demanding craft of artillery, handling heavy equipment and maintaining weapons, to the camaraderie and challenges of serving in all conditions.
