Unknown Normandy

Early photographs by Victor Hugo's family and circle reveal the Normandy and Channel Island places that shaped his life and inspired his writing.
Known for his novels ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, Victor Hugo was also involved in pioneering photography. This exhibition showcases early photographs taken by the family and circle of Hugo, as part of MILLENIUM – 2027 European Year of the Normans.
As part of MILLENIUM – 2027 European Year of the Normans, Jersey Heritage, in partnership with Guernsey Museums, The Victor Hugo Centre in Guernsey and Maison Vacquerie in Normandy, presents an exhibition exploring the places that shaped Victor Hugo’s life and inspired some of his most creative work.
Bringing together three locations with deep personal and creative significance for Hugo, the exhibition celebrates the enduring cultural connections between Normandy and the Channel Islands. Its title takes inspiration from a book Hugo wrote in 1857, reflecting on the historic and cultural ties that link these neighbouring shores.
Visitors can discover the shared heritage, literary legacy and cross-Channel connections that continue to unite Normandy and the Channel Islands.
